MYSTICAL ORDER OF MIRAM
MARDI GRAS 2008
Alabama
University ’s “Big AL” to headline the Mirams Mardi Gras Parade
The Mystical Order of Mirams is proud to announce Crimson Tide’s Big Al
as the Grande Marshall for the 2nd Annual Mystical Order of Mirams Parade.
The story of how the elephant became the mascot for The
University of
Alabama dates back to 1930. On October 8 of that year, a sportswriter wrote, "At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this
Alabama varsity.” Big Al's debut as UA's mascot came at the 1979 Sugar Bowl, where the Crimson Tide turned back
Penn
State at the goal line to earn a 14-7 victory and a national championship.
Today, the elephant is synonymous with the Crimson Tide and Big Al is one of the nation's most popular collegiate mascots.
The Mirams are delighted to have such an exciting celebrity for our Parade. Big Al continues to represent the values set forth by the organization to be family oriented. The Mirams are 100 members strong and was established in early 2006. While our group is still in its infancy; our hope is to leave a legacy of giving back to the community. By combining the expertise and energy of our Members; our resources are endless, making it possible to contribute to a charity, or charitable cause with each and every one of our events.
Staying with Mardi Gras tradition, Miram Members ride on theme based parade floats built in
Mobile, AL by professional Float builders. In that same vein, our Marshals ride on horseback.

The Mystical Order of Mirams Parade will take place this Mardi Gras Season on Friday February 1, 2008 and will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.
The parade route will begin at Ruby Tuesdays in
Orange
Beach and will end at Hwy 161.

This parade was added just last year to the Orange Beach Mardi Gras parade calendar The city of Orange Beach wrote “The addition of the Mirams Friday night Parade took this beach to a new level of Mardi Gras happenings!” An estimated 30,000 revelers were in attendance last February for the 2007 Mardi Gras Parade weekend in
Orange
Beach . Our members have already earned a reputation when it comes to throwing. Our creed is to never run out of goodies to throw..After all that is what a parade is all about for the kids.
The Mirams parade is always family oriented and can be enjoyed by Mardi Gras enthusiasts of all ages.
It wasn’t easy, and it took a village, but we did it. We formed, organized a parade, and put on an elaborate ball at the Sportsplex in
Orange
Beach , all in the first year.
